Our season opens with a sumptuous celebration of English music. Parry’s famous ode Blest Pair of Sirens (recently heard at the Royal Wedding) is the very pinnacle of Victorian public grandeur. In contrast, the Hymnus Paradisi, perhaps Herbert Howells’ greatest work, is a deeply personal and moving response to the death of a beloved son. Elgar’s magisterial and popular Enigma Variations complete this mouth-watering programme.
